Training – III
Allocation of losses in systems with large scale penetration of distributed PV generation

Microgrids development requires diverse activities and analysis before being installed to reduce risks. In this training session a microgrid deployment methodology is explained including supporting tools developed for that purpose and some real examples are described to demonstrate the viability of the methodology.

Joseph Mutale

Joseph Mutale is a Professor of Sustainable Energy and Electric Power Systems as well as Director of Social Responsibility in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. Prior to joining The University of Manchester in 2002, Prof Mutale spent over 15 years in the electric utility industry in Zambia where his last role was Director of Engineering Development at ZESCO, the Zambian National Utility. Prof Mutale cofounded the Zambia Renewable Energy Association, for which he is the current Chairman. He also founded and is the immediate past Chair of the IEEE Working Group on Sustainable Energy Systems for Developing Communities and is a member of the CIGRE Advisory Group on Rural Electrification. Prof Mutale is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Member of the IEEE President’s Ad Hoc Committee on Activities in Africa.

This Training was a 2-hour session followed by refreshments on Wednesday 9th October 2019 Room 11:00 D102.


Raquel Garde Aranguren

Raquel Garde Aranguren PhD. Chemistry with more than 20 years of experience in research. Since 2002 is working in the Renewable Energy Grid Integration Department of Cener. She is responsible of the Energy Storage Group and manages activities related to Renewable Energies Grid Integration by using Energy Storage Systems (chemical, electrochemical, mechanical, etc.). She has established the Energy Storage Area (activities, projects, staff) and has participated in the design and development of the Energy Storage Facilities (Electrochemical and Renewables Integration Labs). She has also spearheaded several private and public projects from concept to development. Moreover she takes part in other activities such as: Development and management of budgets, oversaw and training staff, liaison between staff, senior manager and clients during project cycle and meeting project milestones and deliver dates; Establishment of relationships and collaborations with international companies and organizations. Regarding scientific activities she is author of almost one hundred of scientific publications (books, chapters and scientific journals) and international conferences. She has participated and participates in many national and international projects and is the leader of several expert groups and Committees. In addition, she is the author of two patents and participates as an expert in evaluation processes in both national and international (6th and 7th Framework Programme, Horizon 2020) and as an international expert for the European Union. She has extensive teaching experience in the University field (national and international) where she has overseen Ph.D and Master projects and has given classes during 4 years. In the Renewable Energy Sector to date she has taken part in many energy storage system courses.


Training – I
Modelling photovoltaic energy production: presentation of the MotherPV method developed at CEA

Modelling photovoltaic energy production is of uttermost importance when developing energy systems based on photovoltaics. The MotherPV method has been developed at CEA since 2006 in order to provide a very accurate method to predict the photovoltaic production in a given site for a given technology, for the sizing of energy systems, and for the very accurate (0.5 %) monitoring of the performance of photovoltaic systems, from small domestic systems to multimegawatts solar farms. This method shows that the knowledge of the solar resource becomes the key point for the sizing of systems including photovoltaic modules.

Antoine Guerin de Montgareuil

Antoine Guerin de Montgareuil graduated from Paris Mining School ENSMP in 1977 and the M.Sc. in Computer Science from Nice University in 1986. He is research engineer at CEA’s solar group since 1997.

He is an expert in the measurement and the modelling and the prediction of the solar resource, the measurement and the modelling of the performance of photovoltaics, modules and systems, and the sizing of energy storage for photovoltaics in smart grids. In 1987, he had started-up artificial intelligence research at The National Institute of Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA) and recently participated in a collaboration with Météo France and French Laboratoire National d’Essais (LNE), he also participated to the accurate calibration of absolute cavity radiometers and of global pyranometers.

Antoine Guerin de Montgareuil has been involved in many international and national research projects, including as an expert within the   international Energy Agency. He is currently working in the domain of solar resource forecasting with the universities of the French overseas departments.
